THEY didn’t get dressed again for another couple of hours. To Will’s disappointment, Takoda bound his hair with a rubber band just before leaving the trailer. Outside, Takoda checked on Horse and let him out into his paddock. Takoda disappeared behind the barn, and Will heard an engine start. Then a four-wheeler zoomed around the barn and stopped where Will waited. Takoda tossed him a helmet, and Will put it on.
“These are a lot easier for getting around and a lot more fun,” Takoda said loudly. Will got on behind Takoda, wrapped his arms around Takoda’s waist, and they took off.
They bounced and zoomed over the land, the wind blowing through Will’s clothes. Not that he cared—the sun had warmed things nicely. “Where are we going?”
“I thought we’d go to some of the canyons,” Takoda shouted over the whine of the engine and then sped up. For a second Will thought he was going to slip off, and he tightened his grip. The trees zoomed by, and Will was having the time of his life. After a little while, they pulled up in front of a small, weather-beaten house. The door opened and Chay and Coyote hurried out to the garage. Soon they zoomed out on matching four-wheelers, which they pulled to a stop next to Takoda and Will. “We need to hit the trading post so we can get food,” Takoda said. “Then I thought we’d head for Rainbow Canyon.” The other two nodded and took off, raising a cloud of dust. Will heard Takoda growl. “Hang on,” he said, and Will tightened his grip as Takoda peeled out. Soon they’d caught up and then passed first Chay and then Coyote. It was a race, and Will’s heart pounded.
“They’re gaining on us,” he said, and Takoda sped up once again. They were flying, and it felt amazing. They approached the reservation center, where Takoda slowed down and pulled up in front of a small store, with the others pulling in next to him.
“What did you do to that thing?” Coyote asked as he got off his ATV. “You smoked both of us.”
“That’ll teach you to cheat,” Takoda said and then turned to Will. “Loser buys doughnuts and coffee.” Takoda turned back to Coyote. “And I’m feeling really hungry.”
The other two groaned, and Will followed Takoda inside.
“You’re just in time. I close in a few minutes,” the man behind the counter said.
“Will, this is Paytah. His partner, Bryce, is my boss, and Paytah makes the best doughnuts anywhere. Coyote needs a dozen as well as four coffees,” Takoda said, and Paytah turned to the lanky man.
“You lost, huh?” he said with a nod and began filling the order. Coyote grunted something about cheating, and Takoda swatted at him.
“Yeah, he lost,” Takoda said. “We’re heading to Rainbow Canyon.”
“You want the cooler?” Paytah asked. He pulled an old insulated one from behind the counter and handed it to Takoda. “Finish up your shopping. I want to get ready to close.”
“Why are you working today?” Takoda asked.
